Keyshia Ka’Oir managing Gucci Mane schizophrenia
Gucci Mane and his wife Keyshia Ka’Oir recently opened up about how they manage his diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In a candid interview they spoke about the coping mechanisms and supportive strategies they use at home, offering a rare look into life with serious mental-health conditions.
Ka’Oir explained that she keeps careful watch for early signs of an episode. She described how she removes apps from his phone—such as Instagram and other social media platforms—and sometimes even changes his passwords in order to prevent any risky public behaviour during vulnerable moments. “I have a system,” she said. “I take his apps off his phone… I control that. You’re not going on Instagram… it’s deleted.”
She also said she watches for changes in his behaviour very closely. For example, she notices when he becomes withdrawn, stops talking, doesn’t eat or sleep, or sends text messages where there’s a period after each word. Those are signals to her that an episode may be starting. “When I catch it… that’s why he hasn’t had another one,” she noted.
For his part, Gucci Mane said that during untreated episodes he experienced hearing voices and thinking people were against him—describing it as being in a “warped world” or “psychosis.” He credited his current stability to therapy, medication and the support of his wife. He emphasised that self-responsibility is essential: “You got to do the work yourself if you want to really get better.”
Their openness helps shine a light on less-spoken-about issues in the world of hip-hop and celebrity mental health. It also underscores how critical the role of a supportive partner and structured plan can be when managing chronic mental-health disorders.
