Kwara court sentences man for slitting neighbour’s throat
A Kwara State court has sentenced a man to five years imprisonment for slitting his neighbour’s throat during a violent altercation in the state. The conviction followed a full trial in which the prosecution proved that the attack was deliberate and nearly cost the victim his life.
According to court findings, the incident occurred after a disagreement between the two neighbours escalated into violence. The convict was said to have used a sharp object to slash the victim’s throat, causing severe injuries and heavy bleeding. The injured neighbour was rushed to a hospital where doctors were able to save his life after emergency treatment.
During the trial, the court heard testimonies from witnesses and medical experts who confirmed the extent of the injuries sustained. The defendant pleaded for leniency, but the judge ruled that the gravity of the offence required a firm punishment to serve as a deterrent to others.
In delivering judgment, the court described the act as callous and dangerous, stating that human life must be respected at all times. The judge added that the sentence was meant to reflect the seriousness of the crime and to promote peace and lawful conduct in the society.
The victim and members of the community have expressed relief over the judgment, saying it brings a sense of justice and closure. Residents also called for continued efforts to address rising cases of violence at the community level.
