Lagos reckless driver crushes street sweeper to death
A street sweeper has died after being crushed by a reckless driver in Lagos, in a tragic incident that has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for road safety enforcement. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m. along Akoka Road near the University of Lagos area, where the victim was carrying out his duties cleaning the street when a speeding vehicle lost control and ran into him.
Eyewitnesses said the driver, who was reportedly travelling at high speed, failed to slow down or avoid the sweeper as he worked close to the roadside. Residents and pedestrians who witnessed the impact rushed to assist, but the sweeper, identified simply as Mr. Adebowale, was already badly injured and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after arrival. Passersby said the scene was chaotic as the driver attempted to flee, but was later stopped by community members and handed over to the police at the Akoka Division.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and police officers arrived at the scene to secure the area and take the suspect into custody. The driver, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was detained for reckless driving and manslaughter as investigations continue. Officials said the vehicle involved was impounded and will be examined as part of the police inquiry.
Residents condemned the driver’s behaviour, saying that persistent speeding and disregard for road safety have made certain Lagos roads dangerous for motorists, pedestrians and workers alike. A spokesperson for LASTMA urged drivers to slow down, especially in areas with heavy pedestrian activity, and called on authorities to step up enforcement of speed limits and traffic regulations.
The tragic loss of the street sweeper has reignited debates about road safety in Lagos, where commercialisation of vehicle use, congestion, and frequent traffic violations have contributed to numerous fatal crashes in recent years. Family members of the victim are mourning his death and are expected to pursue legal action as the case moves through the justice system.
