Man arraigned for killing his wife with axe in Enugu
A 46-year-old man, Livinus Aniegbunam Okoh, has been formally arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Enugu State for the alleged murder of his wife, Onyinyechi Okoh, on October 8, 2025, at Umuedum Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government Area.
According to the charge, the accused is alleged to have struck the victim on her lower jaw with an axe at about 4:00 a.m., an act which allegedly led to her death, in breach of Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code (Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State).
He appeared before Magistrate Uche Jideofor at Court 3 of the Enugu East Magisterial District, where he was remanded in custody because the court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to grant bail. The matter has been adjourned to December 17, 2025, and the file is to be transmitted to the State Ministry of Justice for further legal advice.
The state government, via the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, condemned the killing as a “grave reminder of the persistent and unacceptable menace of gender-based violence” in Enugu State and reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on violence against women and girls.
