Man sets ex-girlfriend ablaze in Ibadan over oath claim

A man identified as Lawal Faruq has been arrested for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend ablaze in the Mami Market area of Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, Oyo State. According to eyewitnesses, Faruq reportedly doused the woman, Omolola Hassan, with petrol before igniting the fire. The suspect told police that he believed the two had taken an oath never to separate, and that their split angered him deeply.

Witnesses say members of the barracks intervened swiftly to extinguish the flames and save the victim, who was rushed to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo for emergency treatment. The severity of her injuries is not yet fully disclosed, but she remains under medical care as authorities investigate further.

Lawal Faruq is currently in police custody as investigators gather statements from witnesses, review security footage if available, and assess the crime scene. The Oyo State Police Command has not yet released a full official statement. The case raises serious concerns about domestic violence, obsessive behaviour, and the claims around coercive “oath” practices in relationships.

Support groups and legal advocates are calling for swift justice and protective measures for victims of such attacks, emphasizing that claims of spiritual oaths do not justify acts of violence.
