Melania Trump Michael Wolff defamation dispute
Melania Trump is facing a legal complaint filed by Michael Wolff, who says that the First Lady interfered with his publishing contract and defamed him through public statements. According to Wolff’s filing, Trump and her team allegedly launched a campaign against his upcoming book about her life, claiming that he falsified interviews, fabricated sources and intimidated distributors—actions which Wolff asserts caused him to lose a multi-million dollar book deal.
Wolff’s complaint seeks declarations that his book’s assertions are not defamatory, and if Trump continues to block publication or harass him, he is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. On her side, Trump has sent legal letters to others including Hunter Biden demanding retractions of statements linking her to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and threatening lawsuits for over $1 billion in damages.
It remains unclear whether Trump has formally filed her own defamation lawsuit in response to Wolff’s complaint, but the dispute highlights the tension between public figures, free speech rights and defamation law especially when “malice” and “reckless disregard” must be proven by public officials.
