Mob kills suspected motorcycle thieves in Benue
Two suspected motorcycle thieves have been killed by a mob in Benue State after they were allegedly caught attempting to steal a motorcycle in a local community. Witnesses said the suspects were apprehended by residents who had been on alert following a rise in motorcycle thefts in the area. The crowd gathered quickly after the alarm was raised, leading to an attack on the suspects before security agents could arrive.
According to residents, the men had been seen loitering around the neighbourhood shortly before the alleged theft. When they were confronted and accused of attempting to escape with the motorcycle, the situation escalated into mob action. The suspects were beaten severely and later confirmed dead at the scene.
Community leaders have condemned the incident, urging residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to hand over suspected criminals to security agencies. Authorities in the area have also warned that mob justice remains a crime and said investigations are underway to identify those involved in the killings.
