Niger State man arrested for stabbing friend over pure water
Police in Niger State have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stabbing his childhood friend to death after a dispute over sachet water, locally known as “pure water,” in the Minna area. The Niger State Police Command confirmed that the suspect, identified as Abdulazeez Abubakar, was taken into custody after the victim, 20-year-old Sadiq Sani, sustained fatal injuries during the altercation. Eyewitnesses said the disagreement began while the two friends were preparing for the Maghrib prayer, with the argument over water intended for ablution escalating into a violent confrontation. During the clash, Abdulazeez allegedly produced a sharp object and stabbed Sadiq, who later died from his wounds despite efforts by neighbours to help him. Police operatives from the GRA Division responded swiftly to reports of the fight at Dutsen-Kura in the Minna metropolis, arresting the suspect at the scene and launching an investigation into the case under the state’s criminal laws. The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further legal action as the matter proceeds through the justice system. The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, with residents mourning the loss of a young man who neighbours described as friendly and calm, while also calling for peaceful conduct and restraint in resolving disputes.
