NIN automatic tax ID in Nigeria
The Federal Inland Revenue Service has told Nigerians that the National Identification Number now serves as their automatic Tax Identification Number. The clarification is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to widen the tax net and improve revenue collection through a unified identity system.
According to the tax authority, linking the NIN to tax records will make it easier to identify taxpayers and reduce duplication across government databases. The FIRS explained that individuals no longer need to apply separately for a Tax Identification Number, as their NIN already performs that function for tax purposes.
The agency said the move will simplify tax administration and encourage voluntary compliance among citizens. By using a single identity number, the government aims to strengthen transparency and close gaps that have allowed tax evasion in the past. Officials added that the integration will also support better planning and delivery of public services.
Nigerians were advised to ensure their NIN details are accurate and properly captured, as inconsistencies could affect tax records and other official transactions. The FIRS assured the public that data protection measures are in place to safeguard personal information.
The announcement has generated public discussion, with many Nigerians seeking clarity on how the policy will affect workers, business owners, and those in the informal sector. The FIRS said further public education will continue to help citizens understand their obligations and rights under the new system.
