NLC raises concerns over ₦20bn TCN contracts
The Nigeria Labour Congress has raised serious concerns over allegedly “questionable” contracts worth ₦20 billion awarded by the Transmission Company of Nigeria. The labour union described the contracts as lacking transparency and called for urgent investigations to ensure accountability in the management of public funds.
According to the NLC, the contracts, which were recently approved by TCN, appear irregular and may not have followed proper procurement procedures. The union warned that such practices, if left unchecked, could undermine the efficiency of Nigeria’s power transmission sector and lead to unnecessary financial losses. Labour leaders have demanded that regulatory bodies and relevant government agencies conduct a thorough review of the contracts and make the findings public.
The NLC emphasised the importance of transparency and adherence to due process in awarding contracts, especially in critical sectors like electricity transmission. Union officials argued that millions of Nigerians rely on TCN for stable power supply, and mismanagement of funds could directly impact service delivery and national development.
The labour body also called on the federal government to strengthen oversight mechanisms within TCN to prevent corruption and ensure that contracts are awarded based on merit, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with established guidelines. Public scrutiny, the NLC said, is essential to protect the interests of Nigerian taxpayers and maintain confidence in the power sector.
The controversy has sparked debates among policymakers, industry experts, and the public about governance and accountability in Nigeria’s electricity sector. Observers note that ensuring transparent contract management could improve infrastructure, boost investor confidence, and enhance service delivery across the country.
