Nnamdi Kanu submits defence documents in terrorism trial
Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has officially submitted his defence documents before the Federal High Court in Abuja in preparation for the continuation of his trial on terrorism-related charges. His legal team presented the documents to the court registrar, marking a key step in his ongoing case with the Federal Government.
The submission follows the court’s earlier directive giving Kanu a deadline to file his defence materials after prosecutors concluded their presentation of witnesses and evidence. Sources close to the defence confirmed that the documents contain witness statements, expert analyses, and constitutional arguments aimed at challenging the government’s terrorism allegations.
Kanu’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), stated that the defence team is fully prepared to present its case once the trial resumes. He also emphasized that the defence intends to prove that the charges against Kanu are politically motivated and lack credible evidence linking him to acts of violence or terrorism.
The Federal Government, through the Department of State Services (DSS), maintains that Kanu’s activities and statements as IPOB leader contributed to unrest and violent attacks in parts of the South-East region. The prosecution insists that his actions amount to treasonable offences under Nigerian law.
The case, which has drawn both national and international attention, will continue at the Federal High Court in Abuja later this month. The presiding judge is expected to set new dates for hearing based on the recent filings from both sides.
