NSCDC confirms attack on its checkpoint in Niger State by bandits
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has officially confirmed that its personnel were **attacked by armed bandits at a checkpoint in Niger State, underscoring growing insecurity in parts of the north-central region. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 22, 2025, along the Wawa–Babanla Road in Borgu Local Government Area, where a group of heavily armed assailants stormed the checkpoint, opened fire on officers and disrupted operations.
In a statement issued by the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Abubakar Muti, the bandits engaged the checkpoint between 12:28 a.m. and 1:00 a.m., forcing the officers on duty to withdraw tactically in order to avoid casualties. The attackers vandalised an operational Hilux vehicle by deflating its tyres, stole personal belongings from the officers and made away with one G3 rifle before fleeing the scene.
The NSCDC confirmed that no casualties were recorded and that its personnel managed to escape unharmed. The Corps said it is working closely with other security agencies to track down the perpetrators and restore peace and security in the affected area. Residents were reassured of the NSCDC’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives and property despite the rising threats posed by banditry and armed groups in the state.
This attack reflects a wider trend of violence by bandits targeting security outposts and communities in various northern states, heightening concerns over safety along key rural routes and in border communities. The federal and state authorities have been urged to intensify intelligence and security operations to curb such incidents and prevent future attacks.
