Odumeje calls out Adeboye Oyedepo over silence
Anambra-based clergyman known as Prophet Odumeje has publicly challenged prominent pastors E.A. Adeboye and David Oyedepo, accusing them of failing to speak out about Nigeria’s current socio-economic crises. In a video that has since gone viral, Odumeje contrasted today’s silence with a period he says was more active under former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
In his remarks, Odumeje pointed to widespread poverty, hunger, and general hardship across Nigeria. He questioned why spiritual leaders who once decried policies during Jonathan’s presidency have reportedly become quiet now. He said, “See Adeboye when it was the time of Goodluck Jonathan complaining ‘fuel is on the high price’, and now nobody is talking. Things are going costly every blessed day. Nobody cares anymore. He urged that men of faith should be among the foremost voices to critique government failures.
Odumeje also expressed frustration at how people seem to accept bad governance as “normal life.” He recalled how some pastors used to speak against policies they considered harmful, but now remain silent. He urged the youth to “rise up and take back their country from the businessmen posing as politicians.” His comments have sparked debate on the role of pastors in national discourse, particularly in times of crisis.
Some supporters argue that moral and spiritual leaders ought to challenge political excesses regardless of regime. Critics, however, warn that such public calls risk deepening divisions, especially when directed against fellow clergy. In any case, Odumeje’s sermon has reignited discussion about accountability, leadership, and the responsibilities of religious voices in Nigeria’s public life.
