Ogun records over 10,000 mental health visits in six months
Ogun State government has revealed that over 10,000 patient visits related to mental health were recorded during the first six months of 2025. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, shared the data in Abeokuta while commemorating World Mental Health Day.
Out of the over 10,000 visits, about 1,000 were new patients, while the rest were follow-ups. The data was collected from four service points located in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode, Ilaro, and Ota.
Dr. Coker expressed concerns about how fast mental health issues are growing across the state. She said many people struggle to access proper care due to stigma, cost, and limited services. She identified top diagnosed conditions as psychosis, neurosis, epilepsy, depression, and substance abuse disorders.
The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day in Ogun State was “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” In line with that, the government has committed to making mental health services more accessible, affordable, and acceptable to all residents.
To address the crisis, Ogun State has established community mental health centres in the four locations earlier mentioned. The government has also set up the Ogun State Mental Health Action Committee, consisting of 26 members from various agencies, to help coordinate awareness, education, and engagement programs.
