Oyo Catholic Bishop Emeritus Julius Adelakun dies
Bishop Julius Babatunde Adelakun, the Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, has passed away at the age of 91.
His death was confirmed in a statement by the current Bishop of Oyo, Emmanuel Badejo, who said Adelakun died on Friday, 24 October 2025. The statement described him as a man who lived “a full, impactful life” whose ministry touched many.
Born on 4 November 1934, Adelakun was ordained a priest on 27 June 1965. He was consecrated bishop on 11 February 1973 and installed as Bishop of Oyo on 13 April 1973. He led the diocese for 36 years until his retirement on 4 November 2009, when he was succeeded by Bishop Emmanuel Badejo.
The Diocese of Oyo has called on its faithful to pray for the repose of his soul and announced that funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.
