PDP says Oyo High Court ruling legally inconsequential
The Peoples Democratic Party has described the recent ruling of the Oyo State High Court on its convention dispute as legally inconsequential, insisting that the judgment does not affect the validity of its national convention or the decisions taken at the gathering. The party’s reaction comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding the 2025 convention held in Ibadan.
In a statement issued by its national leadership, the PDP argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to interfere in what it termed the internal affairs of a political party. The party maintained that matters relating to conventions, delegate accreditation and leadership resolutions fall within its constitutional framework and are not subject to judicial review unless clear violations of national law are established.
Party officials further stated that the convention was conducted in line with the PDP constitution and relevant electoral guidelines. They emphasized that all resolutions and leadership decisions reached during the Ibadan convention remain valid and binding. According to the party, attempts to rely on the High Court ruling to undermine its structures are misplaced and politically motivated.
The development follows contrasting interpretations of court decisions concerning the party’s internal processes. While some stakeholders have welcomed judicial intervention as a means of ensuring compliance and accountability, the PDP leadership insists that the ruling does not nullify any outcomes of the convention and will not disrupt its preparations for future political activities.
Political analysts note that legal disputes over party conventions often reflect deeper factional divides. They add that how the PDP manages the current crisis could influence its unity and electoral strength ahead of the 2027 general elections. For now, the party appears determined to downplay the impact of the High Court ruling and move forward with its established leadership structure.
