Peter Obi has stirred debate after a comment made during his address at the ‘Golden Health Conference’ in Onitsha, where he stated that youths engaged in internet fraud commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys” should not simply be condemned, but rather redirected for their potential to contribute positively to society.

Obi argued that while the fraudulent acts of these young people cannot be excused, their underlying creativity, courage and digital‐savviness represent untapped national assets if steered towards productive enterprises instead of illicit gains. He said, “Some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation. Their creativity and courage, if properly guided, can drive innovation and national development.”

During the conference themed “Money Beyond Wealth”, Obi also denounced the culture of greed and corruption that he believes is threatening Nigeria’s future. He emphasised that real wealth is rooted not just in money but in integrity, character and purpose, and warned that no country can achieve greatness if it rewards dishonesty rather than hard work and innovation.

Obi’s comments have attracted mixed reactions. Some praise the perspective, appreciative of the emphasis on youth empowerment and redirecting talent. Others view the statement as controversial, asserting that it risks normalising or excusing fraudulent behaviour instead of holding offenders accountable.
