Peter Obi restates Trump “disgraced nation” comment
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reiterated former U.S. President Donald Trump’s description of Nigeria as a “now disgraced country,” in the wake of the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
Obi made the remarks in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, linking the recent insecurity including the school kidnapping and the death of a brigadier general to the harsh assessment. He argued that many Nigerians were angry when Trump used the phrase, but asked how one could dispute it given the scale of violence in just one week.
He also blamed the current administration under President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing political infighting over national unity and security. According to Obi, the government appears more interested in weakening opposition parties than healing the country.
Obi recalled how under former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, there was a sense of political balance: “the stability of every political party not just the ruling party was essential for democracy.” He called for a return to inclusive governance, saying that in true democracies, opposition is respected and leadership should unite the nation for peace and prosperity.
He urged editors and media professionals to deeply examine why Nigeria is being labelled as “disgraced,” not merely accepting external criticism but addressing the root causes: impunity, insecurity, and systemic neglect.
