A small aircraft plunged into a runway at the Sherburn Aero Club near Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire just after take-off, killing the pilot. The incident occurred shortly before 1 pm on Sunday, November 2, 2025 when a light single-engine plane climbed briefly before tipping into a nose-down attitude and crashing onto the airfield.

Emergency services including the local police, ambulance crews and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene, but the pilot was declared dead at the crash site. The airfield was closed to allow for an investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch and police authorities.

Witnesses at the air club described how the aircraft gained height, appeared to stall or lose lift, and then turned sideways before descending into the runway area. One observer noted that the plane was only about 200 feet above ground before it crashed. The identity of the pilot has not been released publicly, in line with the wishes of the family.

At this stage no official cause for the crash has been confirmed. The airfield management stated the facility is closed on Monday to give investigators full access and to support the bereaved family. The investigation is expected to examine mechanical issues, pilot actions, and take-off procedures.

This tragic event reminds the aviation community of the critical importance of rapid decision-making, aircraft handling at low altitude, and immediate response to anomalies after take-off. As investigators begin their work, the wider flying community will watch for findings that could help prevent similar accidents in future.
