President Tinubu appoints Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police as Kayode Egbetokun resigns.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, marking a significant leadership change at the top of the Nigeria Police Force. The announcement was confirmed on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in a statement released by the Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation, which was tendered citing “pressing family considerations.”
Egbetokun’s departure brings an end to his tenure as Nigeria’s 22nd IGP, a position he held since June 19, 2023, after being appointed by President Tinubu and confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council the same year. The presidency thanked him for his service, professionalism and commitment to Nigeria’s internal security during a period of ongoing national security challenges.
Tunji Disu, a seasoned career police officer with decades of operational experience, was named Acting IGP with immediate effect. His appointment is intended to ensure continuity in leadership and provide focused direction for the police force as the nation continues to confront persistent security threats. The presidency also noted the expectation that a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council will soon be convened to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation as required by law.
Disu’s elevation to acting police chief comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with heightened concerns over crime, insurgency and widespread calls for improved security outcomes across the country. His diverse experience in tactical operations, intelligence and leadership roles within the police service is seen as instrumental in guiding the force through this transitional period.
