Sultan of Sokoto calls for social media regulation
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for regulation of social media in Nigeria, citing concerns over how it is being misused to spread misinformation, hate, and division. His remarks came up during a high-level gathering of Northern Islamic scholars and leaders in Kaduna.
The Sultan described social media as an escalating threat to national security. He stressed that online platforms must be regulated because irresponsible posts and rumors are worsening tensions among communities. He urged religious scholars to use social media responsibly, so they do not contribute to conflict or undermine societal values.
He pointed out that social media is affecting family norms and weakening moral discipline in society. He suggested that the government consider models from other countries for regulating content online, without completely shutting down free speech.
The call ties into wider concerns voiced by traditional and religious leaders in northern Nigeria about increasing violence, disunity, and how fake news and extreme content are influencing public attitudes and behavior.
