Super Eagles AFCON title demand
Former Nigerian international and football administrator Ibrahim Babangida has said that the Super Eagles must win the next Africa Cup of Nations title to make up for the disappointment of their World Cup campaign. He stated that the national team owes Nigerians a major trophy after failing to meet expectations at the global stage.
Babangida noted that Nigerians showed massive support for the Super Eagles during the World Cup qualifiers and tournament period but were left frustrated by the team’s exit. According to him, the AFCON presents the best opportunity for the players to restore confidence, rebuild public trust, and prove their quality on the continental stage.
He stressed that Nigeria has the talent, experience, and depth to compete with any team in Africa if properly motivated and well managed. Babangida added that many members of the current squad are playing at the highest level of European football and should be aiming for nothing less than lifting the AFCON trophy.
The former football official also called on the Nigeria Football Federation and coaching crew to provide maximum support and ensure proper preparation for the tournament. He emphasized the need for discipline, unity, and tactical consistency if the Super Eagles are to succeed.
As preparations for the next AFCON continue, Babangida’s statement has sparked discussions among fans and analysts, many of whom agree that winning the continental title would go a long way in healing the pain of the World Cup disappointment.
