Three sentenced to death by hanging for armed robbery in Kwara

A Kwara State High Court has sentenced three men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of armed robbery. The convicts, identified as Ajayi Samuel, Yusuf Dauda, and Tunde Ibrahim, were charged with multiple counts of robbery and unlawful possession of firearms. The court ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that the men were responsible for a series of violent attacks in Ilorin and its surrounding areas.

Justice H. A. Gegele, who delivered the judgment, stated that the evidence presented left no doubt about the involvement of the defendants in the crimes. The court heard that the trio, armed with dangerous weapons, had robbed several residents of their valuables, including cash and mobile phones, leaving some victims seriously injured. Police investigators testified that the convicts were arrested after a detailed operation that traced stolen items to their possession.

In his ruling, Justice Gegele emphasized the need to deter violent crime in the state, noting that armed robbery remains one of the most serious threats to public safety. He declared that the court had no option but to apply the full weight of the law, sentencing the three men to death by hanging.

The judgment has drawn mixed reactions from members of the public. While some have hailed it as a necessary step to curb crime, others have called for a review of Nigeria’s death penalty laws, arguing that life imprisonment would serve as a more humane punishment.
