Tinubu approves debarment policy to sanction contractors for poor quality jobs
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new policy to sanction contractors who deliver poor quality work or abandon government projects in Nigeria. The Bureau of Public Procurement’s Director-General, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, said the debarment policy will allow the government to blacklist erring companies that fail to fulfil contracts or complete jobs properly. Under the policy, contractors who receive public funds but do not deliver the expected results or quality will be recommended for blacklisting, preventing them from securing government contracts both within Nigeria and internationally. Adedokun explained that the policy is designed not only to punish poor performance but also to encourage efficiency, transparency and value for money in public procurement, with contractors who deliver quality work continuing to be supported. He cited ongoing infrastructure projects such as major highways as examples where improved standards are being seen, and said the policy aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting accountability in how government funds are used for projects. Additionally, the Bureau will intensify support for local content, community-based procurement and affirmative opportunities for women, youth and vulnerable groups as part of broader reforms in the procurement system. Officials hope this measure will help reduce corruption, ensure better delivery on public contracts and improve public trust in federal projects.
