Tinubu Commits Entire Salaries to Armed Forces Welfare Fund Initiative
Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office to a newly established Armed Forces welfare fund aimed at supporting military personnel and their families.
The announcement was made as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, where he introduced the special fund to cater to wounded soldiers and the families of those who lost their lives in service to the country. The initiative is designed to provide direct financial support to injured personnel as well as widows, widowers, and children of fallen heroes.
Tinubu directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to set up a dedicated account for the fund. He stated that all his earnings since taking office in May 2023 would serve as seed funding, reinforcing his commitment to improving the welfare of members of the armed forces.
The president described the move as a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel, emphasizing that supporting them should not be seen as charity but as a national duty. He stressed that the fund would operate alongside existing welfare and insurance schemes, ensuring that no affected service member or family is left without support.
Tinubu also called on state governors, lawmakers, private sector leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative. He noted that collective support is essential to sustain the fund and adequately address the needs of those who risk their lives for national security.
The creation of the Armed Forces welfare fund highlights the administration’s broader commitment to strengthening military welfare and ensuring that the sacrifices of service members are met with dignity, care, and long-term institutional support.
