Tinubu Orders Deployment of AI Surveillance Cameras to Boost Security in Plateau
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the deployment of artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance cameras in Plateau State as part of efforts to strengthen security and curb rising incidents of violence in the region.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in Plateau, where communities have experienced repeated attacks and unrest. The planned installation of AI-powered cameras is expected to enhance monitoring, improve response time, and support intelligence gathering by security agencies.
According to officials, the technology will allow authorities to track suspicious movements, identify potential threats, and respond more effectively to incidents. The use of artificial intelligence is also expected to reduce reliance on manual surveillance while improving accuracy in detecting criminal activities.
The federal government has emphasised that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s security infrastructure. By integrating advanced technology into law enforcement operations, authorities aim to strengthen crime prevention and ensure better protection for residents.
Security experts have noted that AI-enabled surveillance systems have been successfully used in other parts of the world to support policing and emergency response. They believe that if properly implemented, the system could significantly improve security outcomes in Plateau State.
However, some stakeholders have raised concerns about privacy and the need for clear regulations to govern the use of surveillance technology. They argue that while security is important, safeguards must be put in place to prevent misuse and protect citizens’ rights.
The deployment is expected to begin in key areas across the state, with authorities working closely with security agencies to ensure effective implementation. As the situation develops, residents are hopeful that the initiative will bring lasting improvements to safety and stability in the region.
