Troops arrest gunrunner and recover arms in Plateau State
Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected gunrunner and recovered arms and ammunition in separate security operations in Plateau State, as part of ongoing efforts to remove illicit weapons from circulation and enhance safety ahead of the yuletide season. The operations were carried out on Thursday in Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas, with military sources saying the actions were based on credible intelligence provided to security agencies.
In the early morning raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Gwender Village, troops working with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) conducted a thorough search of the area after suspects fled on sighting security forces. The search yielded one locally fabricated AK-47 rifle with magazine, one locally made pistol, and several rounds of ammunition of different calibres, which were seized and taken into military custody for further action.
In a related action in Mangu Local Government Area, troops and DSS tactical teams mounted a checkpoint at Mairana, where they intercepted and arrested a young man believed to be involved in illegal arms dealing. The suspect was found in possession of two boxes containing 1,400 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. The man and the recovered ammunition are currently being held as investigations continue.
Military authorities say the arrests and seizure of weapons are part of intensified operations under Operation Enduring Peace aimed at curbing activities of criminal networks and ensuring peace in Plateau State and surrounding areas. They reaffirmed the army’s commitment to sustained pressure on gunrunners and other criminal elements to build a more secure environment for residents.
