Trump $1.5 trillion defense budget 2027
United States President Donald Trump has proposed a massive $1.5 trillion defence budget for the 2027 fiscal year, marking the largest military spending request in the country’s history.
The proposal, submitted to Congress, reflects a sharp increase in defence funding as the United States continues military operations linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran. The plan represents a significant jump from previous budgets, with reports indicating an increase of more than $400 billion compared to the prior year.
According to details from the budget outline, the administration plans to channel funds into weapons production, shipbuilding, missile defence systems, and military technology. The proposal also includes salary increases for troops and expanded investment in the defence industrial base to strengthen military readiness.
To offset the huge rise in defence spending, the budget proposes cuts of about $73 billion to non-defence programmes. These cuts are expected to affect sectors such as education, healthcare research, environmental protection, and housing support, sparking criticism from political opponents.
The proposal has already generated strong reactions in Washington, with critics arguing that prioritising military spending over domestic needs could deepen economic challenges and widen inequality. Supporters, however, say the move is necessary to strengthen national security during a period of global tension.
The budget still requires approval from Congress, where it is expected to face intense debate and possible revisions before any final decision is made.
