Trump attacks Obama Nobel Peace Prize
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that Obama received the honor “for doing nothing” while accusing him of damaging the country. The comments came at a time when Trump has been intensifying his own campaign for the prize, especially in light of his recent role in negotiating a Gaza ceasefire.
Speaking to reporters, Trump asserted that Obama was awarded the prize merely months into his presidency and without meaningful achievements to merit it. “He got a prize for doing nothing. Obama got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country,” Trump said. He contrasted that with his own interventions in global diplomacy, including the Israel-Hamas peace deal, claiming to have “stopped eight wars.”
Trump’s critique taps into a long-running debate about the legitimacy of Obama’s award in 2009. Back then, the Nobel Committee praised Obama for his efforts to promote diplomacy and cooperation between nations. At the time, some observers described the award as premature given the relative brevity of his presidency before the announcement.
Observers say Trump’s comments are part of a broader strategy to influence perceptions ahead of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize decision, which is due imminently. Critics argue that Trump’s vocal pursuit of the prize risks undermining its apolitical reputation.
Whether Trump’s assertive campaign will sway the Nobel Committee remains uncertain, but his rhetoric underscores how high the stakes are for him personally and politically.
