Trump demands reopen government tonight

President Trump has sharply criticized Democratic lawmakers for what he calls a deliberate “shutdown” of the government and demanded that it be reopened immediately. In a post on his social media platform, he wrote that the government “should open … tonight,” accusing Democrats of blocking efforts to restore funding.

Trump framed the shutdown as unwarranted, especially in the context of what he described as one of the strongest economies in U.S. history. He argued that many government programs, services, and systems that Americans depend on are being disrupted. He said he was willing to negotiate over “failed healthcare policies or anything else,” but insisted that talks must come only after the government is reopened.

The standoff stems from a deeper conflict over funding and health care policy. Senate Democrats have repeatedly rejected Republican proposals to fund the government without first extending subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. The administration and Republican leaders, for their part, maintain that reopening must precede any policy changes.

As the government entered its sixth day of shutdown, Trump’s administration has threatened mass layoffs of federal employees and made moves to freeze billions in funding, particularly for Democratic-led states. The White House also announced that it is not engaging directly with Democratic leadership and is communicating only through its own party’s leaders in Congress.

At present, no resolution appears imminent. Both parties remain entrenched. Trump’s insistence on reopening tonight raises the stakes, but the gap between demands and concessions remains wide.
