Victor Boniface goal drought Werder Bremen
Nigerian international Victor Boniface, currently on loan at Werder Bremen, has pushed back against the mounting criticism he is facing amid his prolonged goal drought in the Bundesliga.
Boniface arrived at Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen after a proposed move to AC Milan collapsed due to fitness concerns. Since then, he has yet to score in his opening matches for the club a situation that has attracted scrutiny from media, fans and his coach.
In his response, Boniface admitted the start of his time at Bremen has been his worst since moving to Germany. He also took aim at the nature of online criticism, calling out users on the social-media platform X (formerly Twitter) who he said are more interested in making money from insults than watching games. He stated: “Most people don’t watch games, they just go to LiveScore and say, ‘This guy doesn’t score, let me make money on Twitter by insulting him.’”
Despite the mounting pressure, Boniface insisted he remains mentally strong and focused on improving: “The media says a lot of things. When you don’t score, then people want to talk … trust me you don’t know anything about me. I’ve seen things, but I am strong … those things don’t really affect me.”
Coach Horst Steffen of Werder Bremen has publicly commented on Boniface’s performance, noting that the striker “can still do better” in terms of holding up play and positioning.
While Boniface’s contribution to the team beyond goals has been highlighted by some analysts, the mounting expectations given his previous form at Leverkusen mean the pressure is high. The next few matches will be crucial for him to regain confidence and silence his critics.
