Victor Ikpeba urges Super Eagles to seize second chance in World Cup qualification

Former Nigerian international ‎Victor Ikpeba has urged the Super Eagles to capitalise on their road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, describing the playoff route as a crucial “second chance” for the team. He made the comments after Nigeria secured a place in the playoff stage by finishing second in Group C, narrowly missing automatic qualification.

Ikpeba emphasised that while the 4-0 win over the Benin Republic national football team was a strong showing, the journey is far from over and requires sustained focus and discipline. He reminded the team and Nigerians that the opportunity to qualify through the playoffs must be seized without complacency.

He noted that Nigeria now faces formidable opponents in the playoff semi-final against the Gabon national football team, and underscored the need for sharpness in mindset and execution. He argued that the team’s players, many of whom are experienced and talented, must match that ability with mental resolve to overcome the obstacle.

Ikpeba added that the playoffs provide a fresh opportunity for the Super Eagles to confirm their global ambitions — to make a return to the World Cup and restore pride in the national team’s prospects. He said the players must keep their performance levels high, maintain unity and hunger, and avoid letting past slip-ups define the campaign.
