Why Seriake Dickson defected to NDC
Senator Seriake Dickson has explained the reasons behind his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying the move was driven by the need to pursue a new political direction and strengthen democratic values.
Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate and previously served as governor of Bayelsa State, said his defection followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and community leaders. According to him, the decision was not taken lightly but became necessary after assessing the current situation within the PDP and the future of Nigerian politics.
The former governor stated that internal divisions and leadership challenges within the PDP influenced his choice to leave the party. He explained that the political environment required a platform that aligns more closely with his vision for national development, good governance, and stronger democratic institutions.
Dickson noted that the NDC offers an opportunity to promote new ideas and encourage wider political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He also said his move is aimed at building stronger alliances that can contribute to national unity and effective leadership.
While expressing gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it gave him throughout his political career, Dickson emphasized that political parties must evolve to meet the expectations of citizens. He added that his commitment to serving the people of Bayelsa State and Nigeria remains unchanged despite the change in party affiliation.
Political observers say the defection could influence political alignments in the South-South region, particularly as parties begin to reposition themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
