Wike reacts to Rivers lawmakers’ defection to APC
Federal Capital Territory Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the defection of some Rivers State House of Assembly members to the All Progressives Congress, describing the move as unfortunate but within their personal rights. Wike stated that every lawmaker is free to choose where to belong politically, even if their decision may have serious consequences.
Wike noted that defections are part of Nigeria’s political culture and should not be treated as a surprise. He said while he does not support the move, he cannot stop any individual from exercising their freedom of association. According to him, political positions are not permanent and loyalty to the people, not political parties, should remain the priority.
The former governor also warned that lawmakers who abandon the platform on which they were elected must be ready to face the political and legal implications of their actions. He stressed that voters gave them their mandate based on party choices and promises made during campaigns.
Wike added that leadership is about responsibility and accountability, not just personal ambition. He said the people of Rivers State will ultimately judge the actions of their representatives, especially when such decisions affect governance and political stability in the state.
The defection of the Rivers lawmakers to the APC has continued to generate strong reactions within the state and across the country. Analysts say the development could reshape political power in Rivers ahead of future elections and deepen existing political tensions.
