Yahaya Bello declares interest to run for Kogi Central Senate seat in 2027
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has formally declared his intention to contest the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a high-profile political battle with the current senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Bello, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the announcement on December 30, 2025 during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other community stakeholders from the district. Addressing the gathering, Bello openly accepted calls from constituents and party leaders to represent the senatorial district at the National Assembly, saying, “I accept to run for the Senate in 2027.” His declaration was reportedly supported by the current Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and other political figures present at the event.
Bello governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024 and continues to wield significant influence within the APC in the state. The incumbent senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who took office in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has previously resisted pressure to defect to the ruling party and stated she would not be intimidated by political rivals should Bello challenge her for the seat. Her continued commitment to the PDP and indications she may seek re-election have added intensity to the upcoming contest in Kogi Central, drawing attention from political analysts and constituents alike.
Bello’s decision to enter the 2027 senatorial race comes amid ongoing legal and political developments surrounding his career, including high-profile investigations and trials. Despite these challenges, his declaration illustrates his determination to remain a central figure in Nigerian politics and highlights the competitive nature of the race for the Kogi Central seat as the country prepares for the next general elections.
