Zamfara chief of staff attack
Gunmen have attacked the convoy of the Chief of Staff to the Zamfara State Governor, Mouktar Lugga, in a fresh incident highlighting ongoing insecurity in the region.
The attack occurred on Thursday evening along the Funtua–Gusau highway as the official was returning to Gusau after an engagement. According to reports, the assailants, suspected to be bandits, suddenly emerged from both sides of the road and opened fire on the vehicle carrying the chief of staff and his aides.
Sources said several shots were fired at the convoy, with one bullet piercing the windshield of the vehicle and narrowly missing the driver. The convoy had four occupants at the time, including Lugga, his driver, and two aides, all of whom managed to escape the ambush without injuries.
Despite the intensity of the attack, the driver reportedly maintained control of the vehicle and sped away from the scene, successfully evading the gunmen. The incident happened near Kucheri village, an area known for frequent bandit activities along the highway.
The attack has once again drawn attention to the persistent security challenges in Zamfara State, where armed groups have continued to target travellers and communities. The Funtua–Gusau road is considered one of the most dangerous routes in the region due to repeated cases of ambush and kidnapping.
Security agencies are yet to release an official statement on the incident, but the development has raised concerns among residents and travellers who rely on the highway. Authorities have continued to face pressure to strengthen security measures and curb the activities of bandits operating across the state.
