2027: Ogun APC Members Protest, Demand Inclusion in Party Primaries
Members of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State have staged a protest demanding full participation in the party’s primary election process ahead of the 2027 general elections. The protesters expressed concerns over what they described as attempts to sideline certain members from internal party activities.
The demonstration, which attracted party supporters from different parts of the state, was held outside a major party secretariat where protesters carried placards and chanted slogans calling for fairness, transparency, and internal democracy within the party structure.
According to some of the aggrieved members, party leaders were allegedly planning arrangements that could prevent equal participation during the selection of candidates for future elections. The protesters insisted that all qualified members should be allowed to contest and vote during the primaries without intimidation or manipulation.
Several participants at the protest said they remained loyal to the APC but were worried about growing dissatisfaction among grassroots supporters. They argued that excluding members from the process could weaken party unity and create divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The protesters also called on the national leadership of the party to intervene and ensure that democratic principles are respected at all levels. They maintained that transparent primaries would strengthen confidence among party faithful and improve the party’s chances in future elections.
Political observers say the development reflects broader concerns about internal democracy within political parties across Nigeria. Analysts noted that disputes over candidate selection and control of party structures have frequently caused crises within major political parties before elections.
Despite the tension, some APC leaders in the state reportedly appealed for calm and assured members that the concerns raised would be addressed through dialogue and consultation. Party officials also urged supporters to avoid actions capable of damaging the party’s public image or creating unnecessary conflict.
The protest comes at a time when political activities linked to the 2027 elections are gradually increasing across the country, with parties beginning internal consultations and strategic planning. Observers believe how the APC handles the grievances in Ogun State could influence party unity and grassroots mobilization in the months ahead as preparations for future political contests continue to gather momentum nationwide.
