South Africa deserve World Cup more than Nigeria Broos

Hugo Broos, coach of South Africa’s national team, has made bold statements in the lead-up to the final stretch of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, insisting that if any team deserves automatic qualification, it is his team, Bafana Bafana. Broos said this with confidence in South Africa’s performances over the past two years, expressing clear belief in his squad’s ability and mentality.

Broos pointed out that throughout the qualifiers, South Africa have steadily built momentum, showing strong results in tough matches. He has emphasized that his players have nothing to doubt after what they’ve done on the pitch. He stressed that their recent performances give legitimacy to the claim that South Africa “deserves to go to the World Cup.”

While making comparisons, Broos has not directly demeaned Nigeria, but he has contrasted South Africa’s consistency and recent achievements with how the Super Eagles have fared. He believes that South Africa have earned belief and deserve the slot more, especially given their form and results in the qualifiers.

He also noted that although Nigeria has many players in top European leagues, that doesn’t automatically grant superiority, saying South Africa have proven their strength even without the same level of overseas exposure for many players.

Broos’s remarks come amid a dramatic turn of events in Group C. South Africa were recently penalized by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player, which resulted in the deduction of three points. That ruling has affected the dynamics of the group and opened up possibilities for Benin, Rwanda, and Nigeria to challenge for direct qualification. Despite this setback, Broos maintains optimism, insisting that the team still “have it in our hands.”

South Africa’s remaining matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda are decisive. If they win those, they can ensure direct qualification. Broos has urged focus, discipline, and belief, indicating that his team is prepared for the challenge.
