UK Raises Student Visa Living Costs from November 2026
The United Kingdom will increase the minimum living expenses international students must demonstrate when applying for a Student visa from November 30, 2026. According to The Economic Times and the UK Home Office, applicants studying in London will need up to £14,130 for nine months, while those studying outside London must show up to £10,827, excluding tuition fees.
The change affects prospective international students, including Nigerians planning to study in British universities and other eligible institutions. Applicants should review the new financial requirements and confirm which rules apply before submitting their visa applications.
New Financial Requirements for International Students
The Economic Times reported that students studying in London will need to demonstrate £1,570 per month under the revised rules. This represents an increase of £41 from the current monthly requirement of £1,529.
For students studying outside London, the required amount will rise from £1,171 to £1,203 monthly. Over nine months, this means applicants will need to show £10,827, compared with the previous requirement of £10,539.
The revised amounts cover living expenses and are separate from tuition fees, visa application charges and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Students must also account for any outstanding tuition fees stated on their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
When the New Rules Will Take Effect
According to the UK government’s immigration rules update, the increased financial requirement will take effect on November 30, 2026. Applications submitted before that date will be assessed under the rules in force before the change, while applications submitted on or after the effective date will face the revised thresholds.
The Home Office explained that the annual adjustment is intended to align student maintenance requirements with the financial support available through maintenance loans for domestic students during the 2026/2027 academic year.
The government reviews these requirements periodically to reflect its established funding approach. The latest increase forms part of an ongoing policy framework for the Student visa route.
What Nigerian Students Need to Know
For Nigerian students planning to study in the UK, the increase means preparing additional funds for accommodation, food, transport and other everyday expenses. Those applying for courses in London will face the higher threshold, while applicants studying elsewhere in the country will have a lower minimum requirement.
Students should also remember that meeting the living-cost requirement does not replace the need to cover tuition fees. Applicants must provide acceptable evidence that the required money is available and meets the applicable visa rules.
Under the existing official guidance, applicants generally need to hold the required funds for 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period falling within 31 days of their visa application. Students should check the latest Home Office guidance before relying on this requirement for an application made around the transition date.
Accommodation Payments and Next Steps
The revised rules also increase the maximum accommodation payment deduction, known as the accommodation offset, from £1,529 to £1,570. This provision may allow eligible students to demonstrate a lower amount of available maintenance funds if they have paid a qualifying deposit for accommodation arranged by their student sponsor.
However, not every rent payment qualifies for the deduction, and applicants should check the relevant conditions before calculating their required funds.
Prospective students should confirm their course location, outstanding tuition fees and application date before preparing financial documents. Checking the official UK government guidance will help applicants understand the rules that apply to their circumstances and avoid relying on outdated figures.
