Man urinates on Vatican altar

A disturbing and deeply disrespectful incident unfolded at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City during a 9 a.m. Holy Mass. Videos show an unidentified man scaling the Altar of Confession, dropping his trousers, and urinating on the sacred altar in full view of hundreds of worshippers and tourists.

Witnesses described the scene as shocking and vile. As security personnel approached, the man attempted to pull up his jeans while still exposing himself. He was escorted off the altar immediately. Officials have not confirmed whether criminal charges have been filed.

Earlier reports indicate Pope Leo XIV was informed of the incident and was said to be “shocked” by what occurred. The Vatican Press Office has yet to issue an official response.

This event is not the first security breach at St. Peter’s. In February, a man climbed on the same altar and knocked over candelabras. In June 2023, another intruder stripped naked and climbed the altar during closing hours, with “Save children of Ukraine” written on his back. After that protest, the Vatican held a penitential ritual to restore the sanctity of the space.

Experts say that under Canon 1211 of the Code of Canon Law, any serious breach of sacred spaces may require suspension of public worship and performance of a penitential rite to re-sanctify the area.

This incident has reignited concerns about security at one of Catholicism’s holiest sites. Many are calling for stricter safeguards to prevent further desecrations during public worship.
