APC rejects ADC call for INEC chairman resignation
The All Progressives Congress has rejected the call by the African Democratic Congress for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing the demand as baseless and politically motivated.
The reaction followed a statement by the African Democratic Congress urging the INEC chairman, Lateef Fagbemi Amupitan, to step down over concerns raised about the conduct and credibility of the electoral body. The opposition party alleged that recent developments within the commission had weakened public trust in the electoral process and called for urgent leadership changes.
In response, the APC defended the electoral commission and its leadership, insisting that there was no justification for the resignation demand. The ruling party maintained that the allegations raised by the ADC lacked credible evidence and were aimed at discrediting the electoral system ahead of future elections.
APC spokespersons argued that the INEC chairman has continued to perform his duties within the framework of the law and should be allowed to complete his tenure without undue political pressure. They further accused the ADC of attempting to create unnecessary tension and undermine democratic institutions for political gain.
The development has added to ongoing political debates over the independence and performance of INEC, with different parties expressing varying levels of confidence in the commission. Analysts say such disagreements reflect broader concerns about electoral transparency and governance in Nigeria.
Observers have called for calm and urged political actors to engage through legal and constitutional channels when addressing grievances related to electoral matters. The situation continues to attract attention as stakeholders monitor the evolving political landscape.
