Klopp Set to Replace Nagelsmann as Germany Coach After World Cup Exit
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next head coach of the Germany national football team following reports that Julian Nagelsmann is on the verge of leaving the role after the country’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to reports from Germany, officials of the German Football Association (DFB) are considering a managerial change after the national team’s shock elimination in the Round of 32. Germany’s defeat to Paraguay on penalties has intensified criticism of Nagelsmann’s tenure, with senior figures within the federation now evaluating the team’s future direction.
Nagelsmann, who signed a contract extension that was expected to keep him in charge until 2028, reportedly met with DFB officials following the World Cup exit. Reports indicate that discussions were held over his future, with the federation said to have offered him a severance package as both parties consider ending their relationship.
The 38-year-old coach has, however, maintained that he does not intend to resign voluntarily. He has publicly stated that he remains committed to the position and would continue if the German Football Association decides to retain him despite the disappointing World Cup performance.
Klopp has quickly become the overwhelming favourite to replace Nagelsmann should the coaching position become vacant. The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager is widely regarded as one of Germany’s most accomplished football coaches and has long been linked with the national team job.
Since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023–24 season, Klopp has been serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, overseeing football operations across the company’s network of clubs. Reports suggest that his contract contains a clause that would allow him to leave the role if the opportunity to coach the German national team arises, making a potential appointment easier to complete.
Although speculation surrounding Klopp’s future has intensified, the 59-year-old has declined to comment extensively on the reports. Speaking recently, he insisted that it was not the appropriate time to discuss replacing Nagelsmann while uncertainty still surrounds the current coach’s position.
Former Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is among those who believe Klopp would be the ideal candidate to restore confidence in the national team. He argued that Klopp’s leadership qualities, experience at the highest level and ability to unite players could provide the fresh direction Germany needs after another disappointing tournament.
Germany’s early exit from the World Cup has extended a difficult period for one of international football’s most successful nations. The latest elimination has increased pressure on the DFB to make significant changes as supporters continue to demand a return to the standards that once made Germany one of the world’s dominant football powers.
Football analysts believe Klopp’s appointment would represent a major statement of intent by the German Football Association. His success with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where he won league titles, domestic trophies and the UEFA Champions League, has earned him a reputation as one of the game’s elite managers.
Despite growing expectations, no official announcement has been made regarding Nagelsmann’s future or Klopp’s possible appointment. The DFB is expected to make a decision after completing its review of Germany’s World Cup campaign and consulting relevant stakeholders.
For now, Klopp remains the leading contender to take charge if Germany decides to make a managerial change. With pressure mounting on the federation following another disappointing World Cup exit, football fans across Germany and beyond are waiting to see whether one of the country’s most celebrated coaches will be called upon to lead the national team into a new era.
