MFM Choir World Choir Games Champion: Mountain Top Chorale Returns Home After Sweden Victory
The Mountain Top Chorale of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) has returned home to Nigeria after making history at the 2026 World Choir Games in Helsingborg, Sweden, where the choir emerged overall champion and secured two gold medals at the prestigious international competition.
The Nigerian choir won gold in the Spiritual Category with a score of 87.38 points, before going on to be crowned champion of the Champions Competition, the highest level of competition at the World Choir Games. The choir also claimed a second gold medal in the Sacred Music with Accompaniment category, according to information released by the World Choir Games and MFM. Upon their return, the Mountain Top Chorale was welcomed home by church members and supporters, who celebrated the group’s outstanding performance at what is widely regarded within the choral community as the “Olympics of choral music.”
The choir, conducted by Oluwasegun Okedunmola, represented Nigeria at the 14th edition of the World Choir Games, held from August 6 to 16, 2026, in Helsingborg, Sweden. The 2026 edition, organised by the Interkultur Foundation, brought together more than 160 choirs and roughly 8,500 participants from over 40 countries, making it the world’s largest international choir competition. Within the Spiritual category specifically, competing ensembles perform a cappella spirituals rooted in African-American traditions, including religious songs, slave songs and hymns, while the Champions Competition itself is reserved for choirs with proven experience and prior achievements in national and international choral competitions.
MFM’s General Overseer, Dr Daniel Olukoya, celebrated the achievement in a social media post shortly after the results were announced, describing the victory as a glorious moment for both the Mountain Top Chorale and for Nigeria as a whole. “A CHAMPION’S SOUND! GOLD FOR MOUNTAIN TOP CHORALE!” he wrote, adding, “What a glorious moment for Mountain Top Chorale of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries!” Olukoya went on to commend the choristers, the conductor, church leadership and everyone else whose sacrifice and commitment contributed to the achievement, describing the win as a demonstration of discipline, excellence, dedication and teamwork.
The victory has been widely celebrated on social media, with many Nigerians reacting to the news and congratulating the choir and the MFM family for bringing international recognition to the country. The achievement forms part of a broader list of winners crowned across nine categories at this year’s Champions Competition, with results announced by host organisation Interkultur following the Games’ second Awards Ceremony. Beyond the individual triumph for MFM, the choir’s success further highlights Nigeria’s musical talent and cultural heritage, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation for excellence in international choral and cultural competitions and adding a significant chapter to Nigeria’s musical history on the global stage.
