Judy Austin Rita Edochie Lawsuit: Actress Sues Over Alleged Defamation, Seeks N1bn
Nollywood actress Judy Austin has filed a defamation lawsuit against veteran actress Rita Edochie at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja, demanding N1 billion in general damages over allegedly defamatory statements made against her.
Austin made the legal action public on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, sharing a copy of the writ of summons on her verified Instagram page, accompanied by the caption, “Enough is Enough!!!” According to the court documents, Austin is listed as the claimant and Edochie as the sole defendant in the suit, which accuses the veteran actress of engaging in persistent defamatory conduct against her both online and offline.
Beyond the headline N1 billion in general damages, Austin’s writ of summons demands that Edochie publish a full and unreserved retraction and apology across at least two widely circulated national newspapers, as well as on her personal social media platforms. The court documents further seek a permanent injunction restraining Edochie, her agents and her privies from publishing or circulating any further defamatory statements about Austin, alongside an order compelling Edochie to remove all existing allegedly defamatory content from her digital and social media platforms. Austin is also asking for N50 million to cover the legal costs of prosecuting the case, as well as 10 percent post-judgment interest on the total judgment sum until it is fully paid.
Court papers show that Austin has secured high-profile legal representation for the suit, with her case being handled by a legal team led by Anozie Obinnaya Obi, SAN. According to the terms of the writ, Edochie has 30 days from the date she is formally served to respond to the lawsuit, with the option of entering an appearance either personally or through legal counsel. As of the time of filing, Edochie had not issued a public response to the legal action.
The lawsuit is the latest escalation in prolonged public tension between Austin and Edochie, tension largely rooted in commentary surrounding Austin’s relationship with actor Yul Edochie, Rita’s brother. Rita has previously made a series of public remarks targeting Austin, including statements telling her to “release” Yul and mocking her after Yul reportedly claimed the two were not formally married. The defamation suit against Rita Edochie was filed alongside a separate lawsuit against Austin’s ex-husband, Emmanuel Obasi, over similarly alleged defamatory statements, with Austin seeking a combined total of more than N2 billion in damages across both cases. Obasi has since confirmed receiving his own copy of the suit in a video shared online.
Reacting to the development, a lawyer identified as Atanda described Austin’s decision to pursue legal redress as the appropriate course of action rather than continuing an “unending online drama” on social media. The lawyer further argued that Rita Edochie, as Yul’s sister, had no direct standing to repeatedly involve herself in her adult brother’s personal decisions, suggesting that persistent public callouts of Austin without direct grounds could themselves constitute defamation if the underlying claims could not be substantiated in court.
