Arsenal Beats Chelsea 2-1 to Stay Perfect in the Premier League
Arsenal came from behind to beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, with Martin Odegaard’s second-half strike completing the turnaround and keeping the reigning champions perfect through three Premier League matches.
Chelsea made the perfect start, needing just 77 seconds to take the lead when Morgan Rogers finished off a chance created by Jorrel Hato, silencing the home crowd inside the opening minute. Arsenal responded before the half-hour mark, however, drawing level in the 25th minute through Kai Havertz, who converted after Declan Rice drove forward from midfield and delivered the ball into the box. The scores remained level at the break, before Arsenal completed their comeback just five minutes into the second half, as Odegaard netted the goal that would prove decisive.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to find a way past a resolute Arsenal defence, who held on to secure all three points. The result extends Arsenal’s perfect start to the season to three wins from three matches, moving Mikel Arteta’s side to nine points as they continue their title defence, and represents the first defeat suffered by Chelsea under new head coach Xabi Alonso, whose side had been unbeaten through the opening weeks of the campaign.
The result adds another chapter to one of English football’s fiercest rivalries, with Arsenal having entered the fixture unbeaten against Chelsea in ten previous meetings across all competitions, a run stretching back several seasons. Sunday’s win also arrived almost exactly six months to the day after the two sides’ previous Premier League meeting in March, when Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both scored from corners to hand Arsenal a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture.
With the victory, Arsenal move further clear at the top of the early Premier League table, while Chelsea will look to respond quickly and return to winning ways as Alonso continues building his side following his appointment. Both clubs now turn their attention to the week ahead, with the season’s early pace-setters keen to maintain momentum as the Premier League campaign continues to take shape.
