Olu Jacobs Dies at 84 as Nollywood Mourns Veteran Actor and Film Icon
Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84. His family confirmed his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, bringing an end to a remarkable acting career that spanned more than five decades.
The announcement was made by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a statement shared on social media. The family described Olu Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, while referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” The family also asked bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy during the mourning period.
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built an impressive career across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before appearing in British television productions and international films. He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the most recognised figures in the country’s growing film industry.
Jacobs became known for his commanding performances and distinctive voice. He played a wide range of roles in Nigerian productions, including traditional rulers, chiefs, fathers and other authority figures. His work helped connect Nigeria’s theatre tradition with the country’s expanding film industry.
Beyond acting, Jacobs contributed to the development of Nigeria’s performing arts sector. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. His achievements earned him several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Nigeria’s national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR.
Olu Jacobs’ death also marks the passing of one of the actors whose career bridged British theatre and television, international cinema and modern Nollywood. His work influenced generations of Nigerian performers and earned him recognition both within Nigeria and abroad.
Tributes have begun to emerge from across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and public life. President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are among those who have mourned the veteran actor and reflected on his contribution to Nigerian culture and entertainment.
The family has not disclosed funeral arrangements at the time of publication. Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
