Agent confirms medically assisted death
Barrie’s agent, Gary Gersh, said her passing was medically assisted in accordance with New York’s Medical Aid in Dying law. He also said the actress had supported and advocated for the law.
The legislation allows eligible adults with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less to request prescribed medication to end their lives, subject to legal safeguards. NBC News reported that the law took effect in New York on August 5, 2026.
Barrie had also previously disclosed that she was living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable lung condition. She spoke publicly about her health in 2014, telling Playbill that she remained active and wanted to help others facing serious illness.
