Bukayo Saka’s Second-Half Goal Gives Arsenal Back-to-Back Wins Over Aston Villa
Bukayo Saka’s second-half strike proved enough to hand Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Aston Villa on Monday night, extending the reigning Premier League champions’ perfect start to the season with a second straight victory from two matches.
The win at Villa Park carried extra significance for Arsenal, given it was one of the few grounds where they suffered defeat during their title-winning campaign last season, having lost there in painful fashion with the last kick of the game. It marked Saka’s second goal of the young campaign, following his contribution in Arsenal’s opening-day 3-0 win over Coventry City, and continued a strong start to the season for the England winger after a season last year in which his fitness and form fell below his usual high standards.
Villa continued to push for an equaliser after falling behind, with Kai Havertz forcing a smart one-on-one save from Suzuki at the other end for Arsenal, but they were unable to find a way through a resolute Gunners defence. Former Villa defender Ezri Konsa, who completed a £51 million move to Arsenal this summer, was introduced from the bench late on for his debut against his old club, receiving a mixed reception of boos and applause from the home supporters. Arsenal were forced to see out the closing stages with a degree of concern, after midfielder Declan Rice was withdrawn late in the match with what appeared to be an injury.
Speaking after the match, Arteta, marking his 250th Premier League game in charge of Arsenal, described the win as a massive result given the difficulty of the venue, praising his side’s squad depth and pointing to the contribution of substitutes in seeing out the victory. The result leaves Aston Villa still searching for their first point and goal of the new season, following their own troubled start to the campaign, while Arsenal sit on maximum points from their opening two fixtures without conceding a goal, a strong early statement of intent as they begin the defence of their Premier League title.
Attention for Arsenal now turns to a first serious test of the season, with the Gunners set to host fellow early pace-setters Chelsea this coming Sunday. The club could also further strengthen their squad before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with reports continuing to link Arsenal with a possible move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
