Chelsea Fight Back From 2-0 Down to Beat Leeds 6-3 in Carabao Cup Classic
Chelsea produced one of the great Carabao Cup comebacks, scoring six second-half goals to beat Leeds United 6-3 in a breathless third-round tie at Stamford Bridge, with substitute Morgan Rogers inspiring the turnaround after the Blues had trailed 2-0.
Leeds controlled the opening period and deservedly led through Tarik Muharemovic, who peeled off his marker to head home Harry Wilson’s corner from the far post. Chelsea struggled to create clear chances of their own in the first half, with a low effort from winger Jamie Gittens, saved by goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, among their best opportunities, and went into the break trailing 1-0. Leeds doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when Brenden Aaronson finished off a move started by Lukas Nmecha, putting head coach Xabi Alonso’s side in serious danger of an embarrassing cup exit.
Alonso responded by making four changes at the interval, introducing Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers and Reece James, and the substitutions transformed the match. Chelsea pulled a goal back when Palmer converted a penalty after Pep Chavarria was fouled by Leeds’ Dan James, before doubling his tally just two minutes later with a curled finish from the edge of the box to level the score at 2-2. Rogers, introduced at half-time, quickly became the driving force behind Chelsea’s revival, setting up Neto to fire Chelsea ahead in the 60th minute before combining again with Welbeck five minutes later, the striker producing a clever finish beyond Zetterer to make it 4-2.
Leeds refused to go away quietly, pulling a goal back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 75th minute after being set up by Noah Okafor, briefly raising hopes of a fightback. Those hopes were extinguished within minutes, however, as Palmer won back possession in midfield and released Rogers down the right, with the resulting move ending in Valentin Barco firing home from close range to make it 5-3. Danny Welbeck completed the scoring late on, finishing brilliantly across goal to make it six and seal Chelsea’s passage into the fourth round of the competition.
By full time, Rogers had recorded three assists from the bench, playing a direct role in four of Chelsea’s six goals across the remarkable second-half turnaround. Despite the eventual scoreline, the underlying statistics reflected just how closely contested the match had been, with the two sides level on possession at 50-50 and Leeds edging the shot count 18-16, while narrowly outscoring Chelsea on expected goals at 2.45 to 2.38.
The result marked one of the standout ties of this season’s Carabao Cup third round and offered a strong early marker for Alonso’s Chelsea side, whose ability to fight back from two goals down against a determined Leeds team underlined the growing depth and firepower available to the head coach as the season progresses.
