Falconets Survive Late Penalty Overturn to Draw China 0-0 at U-20 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s Falconets kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup alive after playing out a tense 0-0 draw with China in their second Group F match at Arena Sosnowiec in Poland on Thursday, September 10.
The result gave Nigeria their first point of the tournament following an opening 2-0 defeat to Spain, while China, coming off a dominant 5-0 win over New Caledonia in their own opener, moved to four points and second place in the group. Head coach Moses Aduku made changes to his starting lineup for the fixture, bringing in Benfica new signing Janet Akekoromowei, who had missed the opening game against Spain, to lead the Nigerian attack.
China started the brighter of the two sides, with Li Chenyu striking the crossbar from long range inside the opening two minutes and Huang Jiaxin firing a free kick over the bar shortly after. Nigeria gradually grew into the contest, creating their first clear opportunity through Akekoromowei in the 17th minute, before going close again with a free kick in the 32nd minute that forced a strong save from Chinese goalkeeper Liu Chen. Kafayat Mafisere won a corner for the Falconets in the 33rd minute, and Akekoromowei threatened once more before the interval, including during first-half stoppage time, but neither side could find a breakthrough, sending the teams into the break level at 0-0.
China introduced Chen Ruilin for Xiao Yafei at the start of the second half in search of greater attacking impetus, with Chen, Xue Sifan and Huang all registering efforts on goal as the Asian side pushed for a winner. Nigeria responded with chances of their own, as Precious Oscar, Queen Joseph and Mafisere all went close, while goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma and the Falconets’ backline continued to hold firm at the other end. The match’s most dramatic moment arrived in the 74th minute, when Nigeria appeared to have been awarded a penalty for a handball, only for the decision to be overturned following a VAR review. Neither side could find a decisive goal in the time that remained, and the match finished goalless.
The result leaves Nigeria third in Group F with a single point from two matches, setting up a must-win final group fixture against bottom-placed New Caledonia in Lodz on Sunday, September 13. Group leaders Spain, who beat Nigeria 2-0 in their opener, have already secured their place in the Round of 16 after following up that result with an 11-0 thrashing of New Caledonia. With the top two teams in each group advancing automatically, alongside the four best third-placed sides across the tournament, the Falconets will need a convincing win over New Caledonia, combined with favourable results elsewhere in the group, to keep their knockout-stage ambitions alive.
